    Can L-arabinose Prevent Obesity?

Arabinose is a common five carbon aldehyde monosaccharide in plant cell walls, naturally existing in the L form, namely L-arabinose. L-arabinose, as a low calorie sweetener, is widely present in the skin of fruits and coarse grains. L-arabinose has the effect of inhibiting sucrose absorption by inhibiting the activity of sucrase in the human intestinal tract; In addition, L-arabinose can also inhibit body fat accumulation and can be used to prevent and treat diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.

The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has listed L-arabinose as a "special health food additive for regulating blood sugar"; The American Medical Association lists L-arabinose as a "nutritional supplement or over-the-counter drug for anti obesity"; Afterwards, the Chinese Ministry of Health officially approved L-arabinose as a new resource food in 2008, confirming its important position in the field of functional sugars.

The main functions and effects of L-arabinose are to prevent and treat constipation, inhibit sucrose absorption, suppress blood sugar levels, and assist in weight loss.

    1. Prevent and treat constipation. L-arabinose belongs to water-soluble sugars. In addition to being utilized by bacteria in the intestine, excessive single intake can also increase intestinal osmotic pressure, effectively bind water molecules, and transport water to the intestine. Increasing the water content of feces helps soften hard feces, reduce the residence time of excrement in the intestine, and play a role in moisturizing and promoting bowel movements.

    2. Inhibit sucrose absorption. Research has found that L-arabinose can inhibit the digestion and absorption of sugars by suppressing the activity of degrading enzymes. According to kinetic analysis, L-arabinose inhibits sucrase activity in a non competitive manner.

    3. Inhibit blood sugar levels. L-arabinose is a low calorie sweetener that can inhibit enzymes that hydrolyze disaccharides, suppress blood sugar elevation caused by sucrose intake, and thus inhibit obesity, prevent and treat diseases related to high blood sugar.

    4. Assist in weight loss. Due to the inhibitory effect of L-arabinose on disaccharide hydrolases, the undecomposed sucrose in the small intestine is broken down by microorganisms in the large intestine, producing a large amount of organic acids that have an inhibitory effect on liver fat synthesis. In addition, the inhibitory effect of L-arabinose on sucrose absorption in the small intestine can reduce the production of new fats in the body.
