Furan resin

Furan resin is a general term for a class of synthetic resins with a furan ring in their molecular structure. It is mainly formed by the condensation polymerization of raw materials such as furfuryl alcohol or furfural under the action of a catalyst. It is a highly effective thermosetting resin.

Details

Here is a summary of its core information:

  • Chemical composition: The main raw materials are furfuryl alcohol and furfural, which come from agricultural products (such as corn husks, cotton seed shells, etc.) and are renewable resources.
  • CAS number: 25212-86-6.
  • Physical form: At room temperature, it is usually a brownish-red to amber-colored viscous liquid.
  • Main classifications:
o Furfuryl alcohol resin: The most common variety, with excellent heat resistance, water resistance, and corrosion resistance. o Furfural-acetone resin: Particularly excellent in heat resistance, and can be used at higher temperatures. o Modified resin: Copolymerized with urea-formaldehyde, phenolic, etc., to improve brittleness or reduce costs.

Main applications

Furan resin plays an important role in multiple industrial fields due to its excellent corrosion resistance and heat resistance:
  • Casting industry (core application): As a binder for sand cores in the "self-hardening furan resin sand" process. It ensures high strength, no deformation during casting, and easy disintegration and cleaning after the casting solidifies, widely used in the production of complex castings such as automotive cylinder blocks and machine tool beds.
  • Corrosion prevention projects: Can be made into acid-resistant mortar, coatings, used for building acid-resistant brick panels or making integral floors; it can also be combined with glass fibers to make corrosion-resistant pipes, storage tanks, etc., and equipment.
  • Other applications: Due to its high-temperature resistance and insulation properties, it is also used to manufacture high-temperature filter materials, electrical insulation components, and high-performance adhesives and coatings.

Performance characteristics

Furan resin has both prominent advantages and obvious disadvantages:
  • Core advantages:
o Excellent corrosion resistance: Can withstand most acids (except strong oxidizing acids, such as concentrated nitric acid), alkalis, salts, and organic solvents, superior to phenolic and epoxy resins. o Excellent heat resistance: Can be used at 120°C - 140°C for a long time, and up to 180 - 200°C under special circumstances. o Room temperature curing: After adding acid-based curing agents, it can crosslink and harden at room temperature without heating, very convenient.
  • Primary disadvantages:
o High brittleness: The cured resin is relatively brittle, with poor impact resistance and peel resistance. o High shrinkage rate: During the curing process, the volume shrinks significantly, which may cause stress in the interior of the product. o High requirements for curing agents: Requires strong acid catalysis, and has certain requirements for construction operations.
