People Who Should Avoid Maltitol
Ⅰ. Can diabetic patients eat maltitol?
Diabetics are suitable for eating a small amount of maltitol. Although the main characteristic of diabetics is that the blood sugar level is too high, this does not mean that diabetics should not eat sweet confectionery products.
If it is sucrose products, diabetics really should not eat them. Sucrose products are a kind of disaccharide, which is composed of 1 molecule of glucose and 1 molecule of fructose. The consumption of sucrose products can stimulate the increase of blood sugar level.
Maltitol is a new type of sweetener obtained by hydrogenation of maltose. Its sweetness is slightly lower than that of sucrose, and it has strong stability to acid and heat. It is not easy to be decomposed and absorbed by the human body, and does not cause blood sugar insulin and significant changes in inorganic matter.
Moreover, maltitol is difficult to be utilized by microorganisms, so it can be used as a good sweetener for preventing obesity, dental caries and diabetes.
Controlling blood sugar, blood lipids, and body weight are the three main goals of diabetes management, and maltitol powder is more in line. Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia.
Hyperglycemia is caused by defective insulin secretion or impaired biological action, or both. Diabetes is long-standing hyperglycemia, which leads to chronic damage and dysfunction of various tissues, especially the eyes, kidneys, heart, blood vessels, and nerves.
Maltitol is an ideal sugar food for diabetics. Its calories are 2.1kcal/g, which is 4.0kcal/1.5g of sucrose. This is one of the reasons why maltose is suitable for diabetics.
Ⅱ. People who are not suitable for eating maltitol
1. People who are suffering from diarrhea, maltitol is the same as other sugar alcohols, large doses of maltitol can cause diarrhea.
In countries such as Australia, Canada, Norway, Mexico and New Zealand, maltitol products will be mandatory labeled "excessive consumption can cause diarrhea".
In the United States, maltitol is considered to be a "generally recognized as healthy" GRAS substance, with text stating that eating more than 100g per day can cause diarrhea.
2. Babies who have not been weaned should not eat maltitol. Maltitol is a product of maltose, just like maltose. Eating maltitol for babies will have the effect of returning milk, which is not conducive to the baby's healthy diet.
3. People with headaches, it is a good idea to eat some food before consuming maltitol. Otherwise, eating maltitol on an empty stomach will aggravate headache symptoms.
4. Because maltitol is non-corrosive, does not stimulate insulin secretion, indigestibility, etc., and has the characteristics of maltitol viscosity, the prices of maltose products with different focuses are also subject to corresponding constraints.
